Towards a net-zero vision

The Holcim Group is committed to a "Net-zero" vision for 2050, with an approach, a programme and milestones approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). We're actively pursuing our sustainability goals by striving to minimize our greenhouse gas emissions in our operations. This initiative is a cornerstone of our decarbonization roadmap. To achieve this, we've launched an extensive optimization program for our cement plants, which includes implementing Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology. These efforts are vital steps towards achieving our environmental objectives.

In Belgium, at the Obourg site, the GO4ZERO project aims not only to sustain current cement production capabilities, but also to make a major contribution to the decarbonization of the construction industry in the Benelux and the north of France. By 2029, the new Obourg cement plant will produce close to 2.3 million tonnes of carbon neutral cementitious materials.

To achieve this, the site aims to:

  1. Decreasing thermal consumption by 40% through the adoption of advanced "dry process" technology for the new kiln.
  2. Incorporating a minimum of 30% alternative raw materials into production processes.
  3. Covering at least 95% of thermal requirements with alternative fuels, setting a benchmark for circularity.
  4. Implementing innovative technologies to generate up to 80 GWh per year of renewable energy.

Furthermore, the site aims to prevent the release of nearly 11 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere over the initial decade following the commissioning of the carbon treatment chain. This endeavor aligns with the European Union's "Net-Zero Industry Act - Green Deal," positioning the GO4ZERO project as an exemplary model for the industry to emulate.
